Help � I�ve Got A Caffeine Allergy

Dear Friend, Have you ever heard anyone say they think they have a caffeine allergy? In fact perhaps it was you. Many don�t understand how one can actually have an allergy to caffeine.

A caffeine allergy is a contact allergy, which means the immune system overreacts to the proteins that are found in coffee, which causes your immune system to begin to produce antibodies to fight off the coffee proteins. Why our body reacts like this isn�t yet fully understood.

Whether you have a caffeine allergy or another food allergy reactions vary from just a few minutes after ingestion to hours after drinking the coffee. Mild to moderate reactions can lest a few hours to usually no longer than a few days.

What types of symptoms does a caffeine allergy cause? Common symptoms includes diarrhea, cramps, skin, nausea, runny nose, wheezing, coughing, watery eyes, and vomiting.

The most unusual part of a caffeine allergy over other food allergies is that it can imitate mental disorders because of the chemical imbalance the caffeine causes. Caffeine allergies can actually cause an altered mental state of delirium or mania associated with schizophrenia. In fact it has resulted in some misdiagnosis.

When you drink coffee it increases the adrenaline or epinephrine found in the body. Epinephrine is used in medicine to stop an allergic reaction, and when it is combined with a stimulant it can cause delusions that are symptomatic of schizophrenia, often leading to a misdiagnosis of mental illness.

Caffeine has also been associated with a high level of creatine phosphokinase. Interestingly studies that were carried out during the 20th century found that patients with high levels of creatine phosphokinase were diagnosed with mental disorders such as depression, mania, schizophrenia, and catatonia. Later studies revealed that a caffeine allergy was often the underlying problem.
