Allergy Food Testing With Skin Testing

Dear Friend, Food allergies are on the rise and determining just what you are allergic to has grown increasingly difficult due to the additional ingredients and preservatives. In most cases the best way to determine exactly what you are allergic to is to have allergy food testing done by your doctor.

There are several methods of allergy food testing that are done but skin testing is one of the more common methods used. Skin scratch testing has been used for more than 100 years. It�s cheap, easy, and safe. There are a few food allergens that are easy to test for such as egg, peanut, Soya, wheat, tree nuts, cocoa, and fish, which all remain stable. Then there are fruits and vegetables, which are slightly more difficult because they are unstable.

Blood tests can also be used for allergy food testing. The UniCap RAST tests measure IgE in the serum a mix of food allergens. There are also several screening patterns that are used for allergy food testing.

So for example in children there is a Pediatric Food Screen which includes cow�s milk, egg white, Soya, wheat, peanut, and codfish. There is also a Tree Nut Screen, which contains several of the different nuts, and there is a Cereal Screen, which contains wheat, maize, oat, sesame seed, and buckwheat. There are other Preset food screen sets used for allergy food testing. The main benefit of these pre-sets is that most of the offenders in one food group are included in the screen so the analysis process is much faster.

In total there are 160 different food allergens that can be used in allergy food testing. Some foods such as those in the milk and fruit groups can have several allergens and allergy food testing can help determine what those allergens are.

There are some draw backs with allergy food testing. There are some allergies that can�t be picked out with this type of testing. For example, as fruits and vegetables become riper your allergy may become more severe but this cannot be address in allergy food testing.
